Study Abroad SIG Conference 2021

Saturday, September 4, 2021 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

The Study Abroad SIG Conference seeks to gather researchers, teachers, and students who are interested in presenting and learning about study abroad instruction, research, and student experiences abroad. The objective of this conference is to promote the research of study abroad and give an opportunity for participants to network among like-minded individuals.

The theme this year is "Study Abroad at Home." Professor Keiko Ikeda from Kansai University is our keynote speaker and she will be giving a plenary on "Language learning Focused COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) as a New Gateway for Inclusive International Education." As the spread of COVID-19 has made it difficult for learners to study overseas, we would like to discuss further possibilities of study abroad and international exchanges under this ongoing pandemic.

The Study Abroad SIG Conference is open to JALT and non-JALT members alike.
We look forward to seeing you at the conference!

Teacher Journeys 2021: Call for Proposals Deadline

Sunday, August 15, 2021 - 12:00am to 11:55pm

We are happy to announce that the call for proposals for Teacher Journeys 2021is now open! The deadline for submissions is 8/15.

Over the past ten years, the Teacher Journeys conference has traveled around Japan to highlight teacher narratives. This year, following the model of Teacher Journeys 2020, in place of a face-to-face conference the Teacher Development SIG will curate a collection of videos sharing reflections on teaching in these new circumstances.

These videos will be shared on the conference site from late summer to early fall. We would also like to include a written version of all accepted presentations in a special issue of the TD SIG's journal Explorations in Teacher Development, to appear in 2022.

Annual LLL Mini Conference 2021

Event Speaker(s):
See attached PDF
Saturday, April 3, 2021 - 10:00am

This year, in the interest of better serving our geographically diverse LLL-SIG membership (and also in the interest of keeping you safe) we decided to hold our annual LLL-SIG Mini-Conference online. It will take place online for LLL-SIG members although the event itself is hybrid as it overlaps with part of annual faculty development sessions at Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU). AGU teachers will be joining either F2F or online and LLL-SIG members can participate online.

Details:

Event name: JALT’s Lifelong Language Learning (LLL) SIG Mini Conference 2021: Lifelong Learning Through an Annual Faculty Development Event

Date: April 3, 2021

Time: From 10 AM - 12:15 PM

Place: Through Zoom (Contact Joseph Dias at giuseppedias@gmail.com to request an invitation to join on Zoom. The Zoom room details will be sent on the evening of April 2nd. Please be sure to set your profile on Zoom so that you can be identified by name as only those participants whose identity we can confirm will be allowed entrance.)

See the attached PDF for full details of the program, including the titles of presentations and bios of the 8 speakers.

Looking forward to seeing you there,

Joseph Dias

LLL SIG Coordinator & Aoyama Gakuin University (English Department's) Integrated English Program Co-coordinator

Further Details
For the last 28 years, the Integrated English Program (under the auspices of Aoyama Gakuin University’s English Department) has held annual faculty development events for new and continuing teachers in early April. The program’s coordinators, senior teachers, and those newer to the program, share the responsibility of presenting on panels and giving workshops. It has been a way for teachers to share their expertise while gaining knowledge and inspiration from their peers. Occasionally, special guests—from both inside and outside the university—are invited to the event as speakers to offer broader perspectives. These guest speakers have included representatives from TELL (an English Lifeline and community outreach organization), the campus’ Career Center, and the Student Counseling Center. One of the main benefits of this event is the collegiality it fosters. By sharing teaching experiences, stories from the classrooms’ front lines, and refreshments, teachers are revitalized so they can face the new academic year with a positive frame of mind.

We decided to offer a glimpse into this annual event by opening up three of this year’s panel discussions to participants in the Lifelong Language Learning SIG’s Mini Conference. In other words, the Mini Conference will co-occur with the morning portion of the faculty development event, three panel discussions made up of eight speakers.
