Processing Instruction Workshop

Event Speaker(s):
Gabriel Misaka
Sunday, May 19, 2024 - 1:30pm

At our next meeting, chapter member Gabriel Misaka will present and facilitate a workshop on processing instruction. Processing instruction is a research-backed way of helping students focus on grammar to improve their ability to retain that language and use it correctly in the future. Meaningful communication is, however, at the heart of processing instruction, and so those of you who follow a syllabus without a strong grammatical component are encouraged to attend.

From the presenter:
Have you ever wondered why some grammatical points can be so simple to explain, and yet may take so much time for students to acquire? If so, this workshop may help you understand why and how to overcome those challenges. We will cover processing instruction (PI), a language teaching approach developed by Bill VanPatten that is based on research on language acquisition. We will discuss some of the mechanics involved in learning languages, and how we can use this information to create activities to facilitate learning. The workshop is designed for teachers to work in pairs or groups and practice designing their own activities. If you have a specific grammar you would like to work on feel free to bring that to the workshop.

. Productivity for foreign language teaching professionals &. What can JALT do for you? What can you do for JALT?

Event Speaker(s):
JULIA KIMURA - 木村じゅりあ

JULIA KIMURA - 木村じゅりあ

1. Productivity for foreign language teaching professionals

2. What can JALT do for you? What can you do for JALT?

Presentations

1. Productivity for foreign language teaching professionals

Foreign language instructors have great demands on their time. Most demands fall into three main categories: teaching, administration, and career and professional development. A teacher’s most important job is preparing for classes. Because teaching is a demanding profession, time management is critical. In this first of two talks, I share motivational and productivity tips which help me make it through the semester. In order to stoke and sustain motivation, working with other teachers, setting reminders, and tracking goals can help us stay on top of our many tasks. Productivity tips include organizing work carefully, as well as scheduling what tasks to work on and when to work on them. Digital productivity tools will be introduced. The talk will end with participants exchanging advice on how to be a more productive and efficient foreign language instructors.

2. What can JALT do for you? What can you do for JALT?

As illustrated in the previous talk, foreign language instructors in tertiary institutions have three main demands on their time: teaching, administration, and career and professional development. In the first part of this second talk, I will address this third demand by focusing on the benefits of JALT membership, including networking opportunities, available research and conference grants, and discounts to events. In the latter part, I will answer how JALT can work for you by showing how participating in JALT can foster career development and create opportunities for professional and personal growth. Like-minded colleagues in JALT can provide accountability and support, which help us to survive—and thrive. The second talk will end with participants exchanging advice on how to derive more out of JALT membership and how to encourage colleagues to join.

発表

Hanami social in Osaka Castle Park

Sunday, April 14, 2024 - 12:30pm to 4:30pm

Come join us for some friendly peer-, near-peer-, and community mentoring and networking at our annual hanami social in Osakajokoen (Osaka Castle Park)! It's FREE and open to everyone, so please bring family, friends, colleagues, students, pets, and acquaintances, or come alone if you prefer. All are welcome! Look for our blue JALT banner on the south side of the park, due south of the castle (and south of the south moat), and directly north of the NTT Building and to the west of the bus parking area. It's a short easy walk from Morinomiya or Tanimachiyonchome metro stations or JR Loop Line. Most importantly, be sure to bring a happy vibe to celebrate the cherry blossoms, the coming of spring, and the start of the new academic year!
Please stop by whenever you can for as long or as short as you like. We look forward to seeing you!

An Introduction to Basic Statistical Methods for Language Education Research Using JASP

Event Speaker(s):
D.S Bowyer
Naoya Shibata
Saturday, April 27, 2024 - 2:00pm

This workshop aims to help language teachers, novice researchers, and post-graduate students learn how to conduct statistical analysis easily with JASP, a free statistical analysis software package. Quantitative research requires sufficient statistical knowledge and literacy, and sometimes programming skills to employ statistical testing. However, JASP enables us to perform it easily without any programming knowledge.
In this workshop, the presenters will introduce three basic statistical testing techniques: descriptive statistics, t-tests, and correlation analysis.
As this is a workshop, it would be great if people bring their laptops (windows/mac/Linux) and any data that they want to analyze.
