David Lisgo is a school owner of more than 20 years, part-time teacher at Kanoya Taiku Daigaku, Kagoshima ETJ coordinator, a columnist for ETLNews, author of Blending a Hand and creator of teaching materials and games for children. Types of teachers aimed at: for teachers of kindergarten, elementary and 1st grade junior high school children.

The presenter will introduce the teaching/learning principles she believes are crucial for oral communication courses and will discuss how they were incorporated into the oral communication textbook Impact Conversation 1 & 2 (Pearson Longman) and how she applies them in her own classes.
Kristen Sullivan is a lecturer at Shimonoseki City University where she teaches Academic English, TOEFL, Composition and Oral Communication. She is co-author of the oral communication textbook Impact Conversation published by Pearson Longman.

How can the gap between English in elementary schools and junior high schools be bridged? Even though English activities will become compulsory for 5th and 6th years from 2011, it is already being taught in a variety of ways throughout the country? What affect will the introduction of English in elementary schools have on the English taught in junior highs? What can be done in elementary schools to bridge the gap? Our panelists will give their individual opinions on these important issues. The panel discussion will be in Japanese with visual aids in English.
Kageura Osamu is currently dean of the Faculty of International Human Studies at Kagoshima Immaculate Heart University and professor emeritus of Miyazaki University. Previously he has taught at Chūō High School, Hiroshima University Affiliated Junior and Senior High Schools and Tsurumaru High School. He was also a member of Kagoshima Prefectural Board of Education, a curriculum specialist in MEXT and professor at Miyazaki University. Also he has been the MEXT committee member on the Pilot School Assessment Committee and SELHi Planning and Assessment Committee, chairman of the committee responsible for the Practical Handbook for Elementary School English Activities, as well as a member of the Central Council for Education’s Foreign Language Education Committee

概要: 平成20年3月28日に学習指導要領が改訂され、小学校に外国語活動が導入された。ここに至るまでの歴史的経緯と、国が目指す指導の在り方、目標、 そして、子どもたちをどのように育てていこう考えているのかについて、データ等を提示しながら解説したい。また、今後、どのような指導内容、指導方法が求 められていくのか等についても、ワークショップを体験しながら、説明を図りたい。「なぜ、スキル重視ではないのか」「英会話はなぜ悪いのか」「フォニック スはなぜ中学校からなのか」「なぜ、担任なのか」「評価はどうあるべきなのか」等に関して、明解な回答を示す。
Elementary school foreign language activities today and in the future presented by Kan Masataka
Foreign language activities were introduced into elementary schools based on the revised Course of Study. The presenter will explain the history of this revision and the national goals and teaching guidelines on what to nurture in elementary school children. He will also demonstrate the sorts of content and methods expected of elementary school English classes by having the audience participate in activities. He will try to give clear answers to such general questions as “Why are classes not focused on skills?”, “Why is English conversation not targeted?”, “Why is phonics introduced at junior high schools?”, “Why does a homeroom teacher teach English?”, and “How should pupils be evaluated?”.

Variety in your techniques: Teaching to reach all learners
Why do some students learn quickly while others don’t? It’s because each student has a different learning style. These various styles are also called Multiple Intelligences, suggesting that our students are all smart, in different ways.
