"Workshops Promoting Children's Literacy"

Workshop 1 (1330-1445): An Integrated Skills Approach in Literacy Education That Promotes Children’s 21st Century Skills by Mari Nakamura
In this workshop you will learn about and participate in an integrated skills approach based on picture books and photographs that develops children’s 21st century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
Workshop 2 (1500-1615): Teaching and Empowering through Storytelling by Kelly King
In this workshop you will learn how to use storytelling as a method to engage young learners (and learners of all ages) in learning language, cross cultural learning, and ways of developing and telling their own stories.
Mari Nakamura has more than 20 years’ experience in teaching children and teenagers at her own language school, English Square, in Kanazawa City. She has also provided teacher training seminars all around Japan and has authored numerous ELT textbooks, picture books and dictionaries. She earned a master’s degree in TEYL from Aston University, and was awarded Best of JALT in 2013. Her main interest is in literacy education utilizing picture books. Kelly King has over 20 years’ experience in teaching English language. She has a Masters in teaching English, and a Ph.D. in education. Her dissertation research focused on Japanese education policy for immigrant and migrant students. She has developed storytelling project-based learning courses and facilitated workshops throughout Japan, Italy, and for teachers-in-training at Cambodia’s National Institute of Education.
