SUCCESSFUL CONVERSATION TESTS: BASIC PRINCIPLES & TECHNIQUES
with Jerry Talandis Jr.
Speaking tests can be powerful tools that help students improve their English at all educational levels. Unfortunately, many teachers are put off by the apparent complexities involved in conducting in-class formative assessment activities. Developing one's ability to efficiently and effectively evaluate spoken language begins with understanding a few key principles and some basic techniques, which can be boiled down into four clear steps. Advice for constructing level-appropriate marking rubrics will also be provided. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to try out and discuss the pros and cons of various marking schemes. This presentation is for teachers new to oral assessment or for more experienced teachers looking to upgrade their evaluation skills.
JERRY TALANDIS JR. has been teaching English in Japan since 1993 and is currently working as a professor at the University of Toyama. His research interests include pragmatics, materials design, language testing, learner autonomy, and reflective teaching.
