This event focuses on the use of illustrations for pre-, during, and post-reading activities. First, if learners negotiate written texts by considering illustrations before and during the reading of the texts, what kind of learning effects might it have on their reading performance?
On the other hand, illustrations could be used as a post-reading activity to guide students through the oral retelling of written texts. In this context, illustrations can help learners reconstruct the texts. When learners retell stories, they might use their own words as well as any new words and phrases that appear in the story. Oral output that uses new words and phrases could lead to acquisition of active vocabulary and grammatical structures.
We will discuss when it is more effective for learners to use illustrations: Before, during, or after reading?
