In this year’s Listening Forum, we will hear from Nathan Ducker about a project that collects comprehension data in real time during English Medium lectures to both uncover the complex dynamic nature of the listening construct and to evaluate learners’ ability to successfully partake in English medium education The second part will be our AGM. We will present the results from our 2024 election, outline the Listening SIG developments in 2024 and detail our plans for 2025. This will include outlining our communication, events, and publication initiatives. We will end with an open forum where current and potential members can discuss any topics or issues pertaining to the Listening SIG.  

 

We are proud to host Dr Nathan Ducker for a special Research Report. Dr Ducker will talk about a project that collects comprehension data in real time during English Medium lectures to both uncover the complex dynamic nature of the listening construct and to evaluate learners’ ability to successfully partake in English medium education. The current project has developed a novel rating methodology that allows learners to report their comprehension ratings during lectures. This data can then be used to manage a stimulated recall interview concerning the learners’ experiences during the lecture or lesson. The results of these interviews are coded and then plotted against a time-line of the lesson to provide a time-map of comprehension- related difficulties and lesson-delivery-related issues. The current project is supported by Kaken grant-in-aid for scientific research number B 23H00643.

 

Nathan Thomas Ducker is Professor of Intercultural Communication and Multicultural Policy at Miyazaki Municipal University, Japan. He has a PhD in applied linguistics from Aston University. His main area of research is the application of complex dynamic systems theory to pedagogical approaches, including speaking, listening, and EMI.
