Abstract: Humour is a fascinating aspect of other languages and cultures, but it can be difficult to grasp, and is therefore often passed over. I have however found cartoons to be an excellent gateway to humour in English-speaking countries for Japanese university students. As I developed a successful repertoire of cartoons, it became evident that cartoons are equally valuable in developing students critical thinking, and extra-linguistic competence in English, specifically in general knowledge, knowledge of history, politics and current events, and the cultures of different countries, including their own and non-English-speaking countries as well as the range of countries in which English is dominant. Moreover, students have to engage in active learning to be able to understand cartoons, and the variety of their reactions to the different types of humour they discover naturally leads to stimulating discussions. Cartoons are of most value in my kyoshoku katei classes (required classes for students aiming to qualify as teachers of English) but can also be used in other classes. My presentation will show many examples of the cartoons I have used (both in face to face and Zoom classes) and explain how to maximise the advantages of cartoons for students learning – and avoid their pitfalls. Students and I have had great fun with cartoons, and I hope my presentation will encourage you to experiment with cartoons in your classes too.
ユーモアは外国語や文化の魅力的な側面ですが、理解するのが難しいため、しばしば無視されています。しかし私の経験からわかったことは、日本の大学生にとって風刺画は英語圏のユーモアへの優れた入り口であることです。風刺画を使ってうまくいった授業を開発する中で、風刺画もまた、学生の批判的思考や言語を超えた能力（具体的には、英語が主流の多くの国だけでなく自分の国や英語圏以外の国についての一般教養、歴史知識、政治、時事問題など）を育成するのに有益であることが明らかになりました。さらに、学生は風刺画を理解できるようになるためにアクティブラーニングに取り組む必要があり、さまざまな種類のユーモアに対する学生の反応も多種多様であるため、自然と活発な議論につながります。風刺画は私の教職課程の授業（英語教師の資格を目指す学生の必修科目）で最も役に立ちますが、他の授業でも活用できます。私のプレゼンテーションでは、私が（対面授業とZoom授業の両方で）使用した風刺画の例を多数示し、学生の学習において風刺画の利点を最大限に生かし、落とし穴を回避する方法を説明します。学生たちも私も風刺画をとても楽しんでいます。私のプレゼンテーションが皆さんのクラスでも風刺画を試してみるきっかけになれば幸いです。

フランセス・コーザは現在、成城大学で演劇、文化研究、日本文学、英語のクラスを教えています。 彼女は教科書を使うよりも自分で教材を開発することを好み、多くのイギリス人と同じく、ジョークを言わないではいられません。ですから、教育に風刺画やユーモアを組み込む方法を模索するのは当然のことでした。
