Title: Using commonlit.org to encourage reading comprehension and discussion in the English Classroom.

Abstract:
Reading is critical in exposing students to how a language is used and the culture behind that language. While printed graded readers are good resources for instructors and students to learn a foreign language, they have some drawbacks, including cost, accessibility, and connection to authentic reading materials. In this presentation, we will focus on how commonlit.org, a free online library, can be used to encourage reading comprehension and discussion in the Japanese classroom using reading materials made for native children and teenagers.
Bio: Travis Blackburn is an Assistant Professor of English at Ehime University. His current educational interest is in how technology can assist in helping instructors in teaching English and better connecting students to the culture of English-speaking countries.

This presentation will explore innovative approaches for creating educational materials tailored to individualized learning using AI technology and applying these methods within multi-level classroom settings. I became engaged in this field while seeking strategies to address the individual needs of students with varying skill levels who were using the same textbook within a common, general education curriculum.
This presentation targets educators and curriculum developers interested in AI-driven personalized learning materials for diverse classrooms. It's crucial for English teaching in Japan and education overall because it addresses the challenge of adapting to varying student skill levels within a standardized curriculum.
Bio:
Mark D. Stafford, an Associate Professor at Ehime University with over 30 years of experience teaching English in Japan, holds a B.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Having authored numerous exams and textbooks, he is dedicated to enhancing study materials and assessments for Japanese students learning English as a foreign language.
