Classroom Management (Engagement): Making Real Connections Through Purposeful Communication
Abstract: What is classroom management and who is it for? What kind of learning environment do we want for our learners? How should we connect foreign language teaching with autonomy and social responsibility? How do we balance what we “have to” complete in our lesson plan with what learners really want to engage in? Can we effectively use L2 (or L1) to address our learners’ needs?
The presenter hopes to debunk some myths about class management and strongly encourages participants to share their own classroom experiences. This session is for teachers who are seeking advice and strategies to engage and empower their foreign language learners.
Bio
Namiko Tsuruta has taught English for 23 years in Kanto and trained Japanese teachers and ALTs in schools all over Japan for about 18 years. Her teaching experiences include learners from ages 1.5 to 90, and formal and informal learning contexts.
She is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall and the University of Michigan. She is currently Program Director of Global Language Institute and Creative Director of The Tokyo Life. Her interests include early childhood development, developmental psychology, learner autonomy, and identity.

要旨
クラスルームマネジメントとは何か、そして誰のためなのか。学習者にどのような学習環境で学んで欲しいか。外国語教育と自主性や社会責任をどのように連携できるか。学習者が本当に学びたい事と教育者のレッスンプランの中で『しなければならない』事のバランスをどのように取るか。教育者はL2、またはL1を効果的に使って学習者のニーズに応えられるだろうか。
プレゼンターはクラスマネージメントの神話を覆し参加者に自分のクラスでの経験を共有してほしいと強く奨励しています。外国語を学んでいる生徒とつながり、力をつけられるようにアドバイスやストラテジーを求めている先生方のためのセッションです。
バイオグラフィー：
鶴田奈美子は関東地域で23年間英語を教えており、日本中の日本人英語講師やALTなどの外国人講師のトレーニングを約１８年間続けている。公的である学校教育から民間の教育業界まで様々な目的に合わせた学習環境で１歳半から９０歳までの生徒を教えてきた経験を持つ。
鶴田はChoate Rosemary Hallを経てUniversity of Michiganを卒業。現在は株式会社グローバルランゲージインスティテュートのプログラムディレクター兼The Tokyo Lifeのディレクターである。専門は幼年期発達、発達心理学、自律的・自主的学習能力、アイデンティティなど。
