Multiliteracies is a term which recognizes that developments in society have significantly broadened the language and literacy skills people need to succeed; traditional reading and writing of standard language is no longer sufficient. Although it is not a new idea today, the pandemic has provided language educators with a valuable opportunity to play multiliteracies-catch-up in the classroom, including in the second language classroom.
In this talk, I will first introduce a few basic points about multiliteracies and then suggest how a poster presentation activity can help teachers integrate multiliteracies into a university class. You may be a natural techie who has been waiting eagerly for this moment or may be someone like me who rather plugs along but is always a digital step behind. Whichever you are, simply paying more attention to what students are doing in and out of the classroom may help prepare them to navigate the communication challenges of the future.

マルティ・リテラシーの多様な文脈と方法を操る
――言語学習者にとってのポスター発表の一単元
マルティ・リテラシーという言葉は、次の考え方に基づいて使われる用語である。即ち、社会におけるあらゆる発展が、人々の習得すべき言語操作やマルティ・リテラシーの熟練技術を著しく拡大してきた。そこで従来の標準的言語で読み書きするという伝統的な考え方はもはや通用しない。今日必ずしも新しい考え方ではないものの、この感染症の地球規模での拡大は言語教育者に、教室での取りこぼし作業をマルティ・リテラシーで補うという貴重な機会を提供することとなった。第二言語習得の授業もその例外ではない。
この発表でははじめにマルティ・リテラシーに関する基礎的事項を二三紹介し、つづいてポスター発表を通して教員がいかにマルティ・リテラシーを大学の授業に取り込むことができるかを示したい。なかにはこの瞬間を首を長くして待ち望んできた、生まれながらの技術屋さんもいるでしょうし、私のように何とかこなしてきたけれども、いつもデジタルで一歩おくれている人もいるでしょう。いずれにしろ、学生らが教室の内と外で実践していることにもっと注意を傾けることで、将来待ち受けるコミュニケーションについての諸問題に学生が対処できる備えを手助けできましょう。
