Presentation Abstract: Whether you've been here in Tottori for one year, or three (or more!), you've noticed that it is one of the most liveable places in Japan. We have fresh air, good food, a (relatively) low cost of living, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stay here after your time in the JET Programme ends? Or, are you curious to see where those old JETs have ended up? This is your opportunity to hear what it is like to stay here for years (and years, and years…) Please come and join us for an entertaining afternoon. And, if you are thinking of staying, this is a forum where you can ask your questions. There will be a question and answer session as well as a panel discussion during the second half of the event.

Presenter Bios:
1. Christopher Hollis has taught in Japan for 13 years. MA in TESL from the University of Illinois (USA). Research interests: Second language vocabulary acquisition, extensive reading, bilingualism, diversity & inclusion, and TBLT. Former president of Tottori JALT. Chris was the inspiration behind US comedian Conan O’Brien’s visit to Hokuei (“Conan Town”), an event that went viral all over the world, and launched Tottori Prefecture into the No. 1 Japan Travel Destination spot in 2019.
2. Mel Ok feels that his love for language and video games helped him pave a career in the games industry. Ace Honyaku, Ltd. has provided high-quality localizations for a number of titles you may recognize!
3. Kieran Enright currently works as a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) for the Tottori prefectural government office. MA in Applied Linguistics. He will give us his thoughts on using your skills/knowledge/experiences to contribute to the community as well as discussing future opportunities in Tottori Prefecture.
4. Raymond Levy is an Assistant Professor at Tottori College in Kurayoshi. Ray has taught EFL in Japan at the secondary and post-secondary level for over ten years. His research areas include syllabus and curriculum development as well as learner feedback.
5. Martin Barnard taught English on the JET Programme from 2007-2012. After that, he started teaching English privately. He says he has had some interesting experiences, but the most meaningful for him has been the great students. Martin now works for one of his students as the general manager of a company they started together. He will talk about life in Japan after JET.
(Moderator: Bettina Begole, ex-ALT, now a professor at Tottori University of Environmental Studies)
