"What Language Should We Be Using in Our Classrooms?"

Event Speaker(s):
Takaaki Hiratsuka
Sunday, July 25, 2010 - 1:30pm to 4:30pm

With growing English education fever in Japan in mind, it is time to consider what would be the ideal teacher/classroom language in daily English lessons. Some researchers like Medgyes have abandoned the idea of NEST and NNEST dichotomy, and other researchers like Cook have come to realize the important factor L1 plays in the language classroom. The speaker will take a closer look at the N/NNEST issue and the L1 use in English classes by examining and interpreting activities and interviews in which high school students in Akita participated.
Takaaki Hiratsuka is a full-time English teacher at Futatsui Senior High School as well as a graduate student at Akita International University.
