These days students can easily use Machine Translation (MT) to avoid doing L2 educational activities, such as reading an English text. On the other hand, MT can be used as an effective learning and communication tool. Considering this, teachers must set guidelines and incorporate educational activities which promote the effective use of MT. As the last workshop focused on writing, this one will focus primarily on the use of MT for reading.
After a warm-up discussion, the presenter will briefly explain his research on the effect of MT use for reading and how he used the results to create research-informed guidelines and activities. Participants will then work together to create their own guidelines and activities for the use of MT for the language skill and the context of their choice. Participants may want to use the workshop as a springboard for planning their own group presentation, with support from veteran researchers.
