Amplifying Educator, Researcher, and Parent Voices: Connections Through Publishing

Event Speaker(s):
Dr. Kathleen Brown, Dr. Jo Mynard
Sunday, January 31, 2021 - 3:00pm to 5:00pm

The presenters discuss their experiences with the collection and publication of two recently published edited volumes focused on life and work in Japan, “Foreign Female English Teachers in Japanese Higher Education: Narratives from Our Quarter” (Nagatomo, Brown & Cook, 2020),  and “Intercultural Families and Schooling in Japan: Experiences, Issues and Challenges” (Cook & Kittaka, 2020).
 Kathleen provides background to the development of a book centered on women’s experiences in working in higher education in Japan. She also introduces some of the key themes in the book and the connections that she developed with authors in the book through the editing process.
Jo has co-edited and co-authored several books in her academic field, and is the founding editor of three academic journals. In 2012, she established Candlin & Mynard ePublishing Limited with Christopher Candlin with the aim of closing the gap between research, practice, and publication..
Both presenters speak about the importance of edited volumes as vehicles to develop, mentor, and showcase other’s voices.  They introduce the publishing company that they worked with, Candlin & Mynard, and discuss some of the ups and downs of putting together edited volumes. This is followed by a lively interaction with audience members for discussion and a Q & A.
