Language teaching is an emotion-laden process, with teachers (and learners) experiencing a range of emotions and identity shifts in class. In this workshop we will review how teacher identities and emotions function and are shaped in class. We will then discuss practical ways to better understand teacher identities and manage teacher emotions effectively.
Frustration Regulation in Japanese University English Language Teaching - Sam Morris, Kanda University of International Studies
Frustration is a commonly experienced negative teacher emotion, which if not well managed, can be a catalyst for stress and adversely affect classroom outcomes. Here the presenter will discuss data from EFL teachers at a university in Japan on the sources of their classroom frustrations, how they regulate their emotions throughout frustrating experiences, and the outcomes of their regulatory actions. The presenter will invite the audience to reflect on their own classroom experiences and emotion regulation behaviours.
