Yamagata JALT September Meeting

Event Speaker(s):
Barry Kavanagh
Saturday, September 24, 2016 - 1:30pm to 3:30pm

Title
International collaboration through content and language integrated learning
Abstract
This presentation gives an account of a Karate and culture course carried out at Tohoku University that was created for English native speaking foreign exchange students and advanced level Japanese English language learners.
The course had two objectives, to give foreign students an insight into Japanese culture and to expose the Japanese students to a multicultural setting whereby they could improve their English through international collaboration with their foreign peers.
The talk will outline how culture and language can be taught simultaneously, through discussions, presentations and basic karate applications so that both sets of students can benefit from a content and language integrated learning environment.
