People often feel great satisfaction having read a long novel. The characters and their actions swim in the reader’s head as they try to put mental pictures to events that happened in the story. Some people will then write a review or an essay on the book they have read. And with the memory of the book still at the forefront on the mind, another book is chosen and the process begins again.
Discussing a long novel is also popular but can be difficult to implement. Everyone has to finish the same book at around the same time else some will forget important names or sub plots. Some books can be too complicated for the whole group to have meaningful debate. However, by assigning the roles of discussion leader, summarizer, connector, and culture collector; and through the use of a teacher-adapted text, a very fruitful discussion can be realized.
