The JALT CEFR & LP SIG (until 2017 under the name FLP SIG) discusses the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, 2001), the CEFR Companion Volume (CEFR/CV, 2020) and the European Language Portfolio (ELP), and other similar frameworks and their relevance for foreign language education (SLE) in Japan and beyond. There is an emphasis on developing materials to support educators who would like to use these pedagogic tools; the bilingual Language Portfolio for Japanese University is available on the SIG website. The CEFR & LP SIG has a newsletter, publishes a peer-reviewed journal: CEFR Journal - Research and Practice, holds regular events, and is working on Kaken projects. The outcome can be seen in various book publications, especially with a wide range of detailed case studies from practitioners their teaching and institutional context in Japan and beyond.

The CEFR and CEFR/CV is a point of reference and very sophisticated multilayered tool that relates to many topics not only 'Can do' descriptors but also learner agency, action oriented approach, TBLT, CLIL, teacher development, mediation, backward design, ICC and more.
