Mentoring & Orientation Committee (MOC)

JALT Mentoring & Orientation Committee (MOC) was founded in 2021 to support educators by engaging themselves in Reflective Dialogue in the form of relational mentoring relationships. Reflective dialogue and relational mentoring are based on intensive one-on-one interaction between the participants.

The MOC is continuing to grow and expand its services to the JALT community through the development of further mentoring communities and assistance with orientation for incoming and current JALT members.

[Mission statement]
JALT Mentoring & Orientation committee was established for the purpose of achieving the following objectives:

(1) Build a reflective dialogue community (2021 ~ ) by:
-Bringing awareness to the benefits of reflective dialogue
-Introducing practical techniques applied in reflective dialogue, including active listening / reframing / metaphor / powerful questions
-Building group dialogue between participants to enhance a sense of professional well-being amongst our membership

(2)  Establish mentoring communities within JALT to serve the different needs of JALT members

(3)  Provide assistance and guidance with orientation programs for members, including new members and and support for the Officer Support Committee (OSC)

[MOC Reflective Dialogue Community]

The MOC Reflective Dialogue community is based on mutual learning, where both participants influence one another. Rather than relying on traditional mentoring hierarchies, this community pursues the mutuality and reciprocity inherent in growth-producing relationships. Participation in the reflective dialogue community highlights the importance of its members being authentic, adaptive, empathetic, interdependent, and vulnerable in relationships that are built during the course of reflective dialogue sessions.
