Title: "Getting Students Reading: How and Why"

Summary:
Extensive Reading (ER) has been described as "students reading a lot of easy, enjoyable books" (Helgesen, 2005). There are various reasons for ER which may be interesting for teachers new to the practice, and also helpful for all practitioners to share with students as part of an ongoing orientation that is essential to a successful reading programme. Reasons include: fluency; literacy; agency; language acquisition; the story brain; vocabulary and collocation.
