[F2F] Changes in English Teachers' Medium of Instruction throughout the Pandemic パンデミックを通じた英語教師の指導媒体の変化

This presentation will focus on how English teachers adapted their medium of instruction during the first two years of the pandemic. Data were gathered from surveys, teacher interviews, and class observations. In 2020, Japanese and non-Japanese teachers reported using more Japanese than normal on learning management systems (LMS) and synchronous systems (e.g., Zoom). In 2021, both groups of teachers returned to "normal" levels of Japanese/English use (i.e., using less Japanese). Surprisingly, however, both Japanese and non-Japanese teachers tended to use more Japanese for all teaching functions. Non-Japanese teachers tended to make greater use of writing functions, such as Chat, to reinforce their statements or instructions. Following the presentation, attendees will have the chance to share how they handle various teaching situations in terms of teaching language.

本発表では、パンデミックの最初の2年間、英語教師がどのように彼らの指導媒体を適応させたかに焦点を当てる。データはアンケート、教師インタビュー、授業観察から集められた。2020年、学習管理システム（LMS）や同期型システム（Zoomなど）において、日本人教師も外国人教師も通常より多くの日本語を使用したと報告されている。2021年には、両グループの教師は、日本語と英語の使用量が「通常」レベルに戻った（日本語の使用量が減った）。外国人教師は、発言や指示を補強するために、Chatなどの文章機能をより多く利用する傾向があった。プレゼンテーションの後、参加者は言語教育の観点から、様々な教育状況にどのように対処しているかを共有する機会がある。

Julia Kawamoto has been teaching in Japan for twenty-seven years. She is an associate professor at Ehime University with a PhD in applied linguistics from Hiroshima City University. Her research interests are focus-on-form, teacher training, medium of instruction, and willingness to communicate. カワモト•ジュリアは日本で27年間教鞭をとっている。愛媛大学准教授。広島市立大学で応用言語学の博士号を取得。研究テーマは、フォーカスオンフォーム、教師養成、指導媒体、コミュニケーションへの意欲など。

Eleanor Carson is an English lecturer at Matsuyama University. She has a PhD (Applied Linguistics) at Hiroshima City University. Her research interests include medium of instruction, WTC, and student autonomy. エーラノア・カーソンは 松山大学英語講師。広島市立大学で博士号（応用言語学）を取得。研究テーマは、ミディアムオブインストラクション、WTC、スチューデントオートノミー。

Ian Willey has an MA in TESL from Kent State University and a PhD in second language writing from Hiroshima City University. He is currently an associate professor at Kagawa University. His research interests include English for Specific Purposes, Medium of Instruction, and International Posture. イアン・ウィリーはケント州立大学でTESLの修士号を、広島市立大学で第二言語ライティングの博士号を取得しています。現在、香川大学准教授。研究テーマは、特定目的のための英語、教育媒体、国際的な姿勢。
