Title- Agents of Change: Highlights from the 45th International Conference (JALT 2019)

Abstract- In this forum, the speakers will discuss the new ideas, materials, and directions taken from the 2019 “Teacher Efficacy/Learner Agency” conference held in Nagoya. The presenters will comment on the talks, exhibits, and plenaries they attended as well as how these can be adapted to their own classes or environments. Special attention will be given to university and elementary school teaching, as well as each teacher’s unique research interests. It is hoped that this forum will inspire and encourage both teachers and students of English. Active audience participation is encouraged.
Bio- Douglas and Eamon are originally from the UK. Douglas is a full-time teacher at Yamagata University in the Institute of Arts and Sciences. He plays a major role in enabling students to study abroad. Eamon is an associate professor in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Akita University. He is involved in setting up science specific English courses. Jason, Patrick, and Jerry are ex-pat teachers hailing from North America. Jason is a full-time teacher at Yamagata University in the Institute of Arts and Sciences. The bulk of his current research concerns English corpus linguistics. Patrick is an adjunct instructor at Yamagata University. He teaches freshman EFL classes, using extensive reading as a base for in-class activities. Jerry is an associate professor in the Primary Education Course. He is interested in teacher development as well as classroom research. Tomohiro is a junior in the Primary Education Course. He’s studying to become an elementary school teacher.
