Title: Investigating the Use of Action Logging in a University General English Course 大学の一般英語コースにおけるアクションロギングの使用調査

Abstract:
This presentation reports on a study which investigated the contribution of action logs – writing forms used to record student feedback – toward first-year students learning at a Japanese university. The study used questionnaire data, short answer responses and student comments to investigate the effectiveness of this technique for a group of 136 first year students. The results of the study revealed that a majority of the students perceived action logs as beneficial to their learning. Furthermore, the findings showed that the use of action logs was providing this group of students with a method of content review, a useful tool for vocabulary acquisition, and a technique for managing their learning. There will be time available at the end of the presentation for questions and discussion.
このプレゼンテーションでは、日本の大学で学ぶ 1 年生を対象に行動ログ (学生のフィードバック用書き込みフォーム) の貢献度を調査した研究について報告します。この研究では、アンケート データ、短答式回答、学生のコメントを用い、1 年生136 人を対象にこの手法の有効性を調査しました。研究の結果、大多数の学生が、行動ログは自身の学習に有益であると認識していたことが明らかになりました。さらに、行動ログの使用が、内容を復習する方法、語彙習得のための有用なツール、および学習を管理する技術を提供していたことがわかりました。プレゼンテーションの最後には、質問や討議の時間を用意しています。

Title: Integrating the Teaching of Creative Writing into Existing EFL Courses 既存のEFLコースにクリエイティブ・ライティングの教育を統合する

Abstract:
Creative writing is beneficial to EFL students in significant ways. Perhaps most importantly, increasing student confidence in manipulating language, leading to an increase in student motivation. Previously, many articles on creative writing as a language teaching tool have focused on how to set up a creative writing course. However, the majority of EFL educators are not in the position to implement a full course. One viable option for these teachers to incorporate creative writing into their teaching is to add a creative writing element to their existing English courses. This presentation provides ideas about creative writing activities teachers can use in their existing courses as well as looking at some of the difficulties in setting up such activities within a limited time.
クリエイティブ・ライティングは、EFLの学生にとって大きなメリットがある。おそらく最も重要なことは、言語を使うことに対する生徒の自信を高め、モチベーションを向上させることであろう。これまで、言語教育ツールとしてのクリエイティブ・ライティングに関する多くの記事は、クリエイティブ・ライティング・コースの設定方法に焦点を当てていた。しかし、EFL教育者の大半は、完全なコースを設定、実施する立場にない。このような教師がクリエイティブ・ライティングを授業に取り入れるには、既存の英語コースにクリエイティブ・ライティングの要素を加えるという方法がある。このプレゼンテーションでは、教師が既存のコースで使えるクリエイティブ・ライティングのアクティビティについてのアイデアを提供するとともに、また限られた時間の中でそのような活動を設定することの難しさについても考察する。
Bio: I’ve always wanted to be a writer or involved in writing. I went to university to become a playwright and earned a degree in English Literature and Theatre Studies. I returned to university in 2010 to complete an MFA in Creative Writing for Film and Stage. I have lived in Japan for over 10 years now and continue to seek ways to integrate teaching, creative writing, and my love of literature.
