Title: Pronunciation Instruction in Communication classes
Presenter: Edmund Fec
Abstract: Pronunciation Instruction (PI) is an area of language teaching which receives little attention in Japan. PI is an essential part of courses for those studying to be teachers of English, but the question remains whether it should also be taught in general communication classes for university students. After 6 years of compulsory English education do Japanese university students need PI in English classes? If so, what kind of instruction should be given? This presentation will look at some of the research into PI and talk about the presenter’s experience teaching PI in his university courses since April 2018. Practical demonstrations of useful pronunciation activities will be given. Attendees are encouraged to share their own experiences and opinions regarding teaching (or studying) pronunciation.
