Presentation Abstract: Meaning-focused learning is essential for the students’ fluency development. When we look back on a long history of English education in Japan, or possibly even now, the classrooms were/have been full of language-focused learning opportunities, which explicitly explains why Japanese students were/are not capable of communication in the language. As you may have been informed, the screening system to universities will be drastically reformed in 2020. This will force all English teachers in Japan to modify/improve their teaching to a great extent. The workshop will focus on how teachers can make meaning-focused learning happen in their actual classroom settings. I will mainly discuss the ways to enhance primary (false beginners) to intermediate students’ meaning-focused learning, which may cover junior high school students to college levels.
概要：meaning-focused learningは学習者の流ちょうさを育てる上で欠かせない要素です。日本の長い英語教育の歴史を振り返ってみますと、授業のほとんどはlanguage-focused learningで占められていました。そしていまでもそうなのかもしれません。これは、日本人が英語でコミュニケーションを取れるようにならない理由であると言えるでしょう。ご存じのように、2020年には大学入試が大規模に改革されます。これにより、英語教師はこれまでの教え方を大幅に見直すことになるはずです。このワークショップでは、meaning-focused learningを促進する授業のあり方について焦点を当てていきます。もっぱら初級レベルから中級レベルの学習者を想定していきますが、これにより中学校から大学までの授業をカバーできるものと考えます。

Presenter Bio Data: Hiroki Uchida started his teaching career at a Japanese high school in 1989. He taught students on various proficiency levels for nine years, and he stepped into his new field of teacher training. He is currently teaching at Akita International University, and is Head of English Teaching Practices Program, Graduate School of Global Communication and Language.
略歴：内田浩樹（うちだ・ひろき）南山大学文学部卒、南山大学大学院外国語学研究科修了。愛知県立半田（はんだ）商業高等学校教諭、名古屋短期大学専任講師、鳥取環境大学准教授などを経て、現在、国際教養大学専門職大学院グローバル・コミュニケーション実践研究科英語教育実践領域代表・教授。専門は、英語教師教育、英語教育プログラム開発、教材開発、語彙指導など。著書は「つむぐ英単語（河合出版）」、「PLAY！拼裝英單（笛藤出版・台湾）」「英単語メモリー（Jリサーチ出版）」など。また、「国際教養大学・内田浩樹教授のライブ授業シリーズ」（ジャパンライム）で授業実践をDVDで発信している。
