The Language of Climate Change for Lower Intermediate Level Students [ Co-sponsored with East Shikoku JALT]

Event Speaker(s):
Marian Hara
Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 2:00pm

This online session [ Co-sponsored with East Shikoku JALT] is a follow-up to the Matsuyama/Hiroshima July meeting on ways to stimulate students' interest & involvement in climate change issues. In this session, we will focus directly on developing materials for Japanese students, many of whom have not learned the basics of the climate issue in any language. As this is the biggest challenge for the survival of humans and other species, it is important to help young Japanese develop the motivation, knowledge and communicative skills to address the issues in their own lives.
Using Japanese language support and focusing on communicative activities, teachers will be invited to try the activities for themselves and discuss in breakout rooms how they can best apply the materials in their own teaching situations. The take-home materials will be yours to adapt, for higher levels too.
Marian Hara, (BA – Dip. RSA) taught Global Studies for many years at a private high school in Tokyo, with a strong focus on environmental issues. After retiring last year, she took part in the first Climate Reality training held in Japan by Al Gore, the former Vice President of the USA. She continues to give presentations and workshops to high school students and the general public.
There will be a short guest appearance by Hinako Arao of 350 Japan, a climate activist who will share some of her know-how and ideas on motivating young students to learn about the issues affecting them and to take action.
