Speaker: Noriko Nagai, Ibaraki University
Summary: In this presentation Dr. Nagai first introduced CEFR: a set of guidelines, created by the Council of Europe, used to describe different levels of language proficiency. She then demonstrated how she and her colleagues adapted CEFR into Ibaraki University's compulsory English curriculum. Focusing on course goals and outcomes, she described how she and her colleagues selected relevant components from a list of CEFR language scales (links to Microsoft Word file). This method then lends itself to straightforward assessment by using can-do lists which conveniently correspond to CEFR language scales.
Dr. Nagai's story of her university's adaptation of CEFR revealed some of the difficulties in restructuring a curriculum around standards originally created for European language learners. She also highlighted some of the benefits that can be gained by shaping class contents and syllabi around a common framework.
