Graded Reading the Good and the Bad

Event Speaker(s):
Harry Carley, Matsuyama University
Sunday, December 15, 2019 - 2:15pm to 4:20pm

This presentation concerns graded reading and in particular the use of the Mreader online system. Graded reading has proven to be very advantageous for many language learners. The Mreader system which has been in existence for many years is a free tool that combines physical books and an online quiz to evaluate reading comprehension. The core elements of this lecture will cover problems and predicaments that this presenter encountered when he first introduced Mreader to his university students. Changes and corrections in the implementation of Mreader as they have been blended into courses will be shared and explained. While some problems have been solved there are still others that continue to frustrate with the smooth operation of Mreader. Not every student loves to read and for Japanese students this can be challenging. At the conclusion of this presentation the attendees will hopefully come away with a clear understanding of the Mreader system, the issues that a lecturer and learner may face utilizing graded reading and solutions and suggestions for a well-functioning learner environment.
