Join Nagoya JALT, the TYL SIG, and National Geographic Learning for our 2024 YLT forum entitled "Celebration for Young Learners Education". This forum will be held at Nagoya Kokusai Center, 3rd Floor, No.2 ROOM from 1 pm to 4:45 pm. Join us for an inspiring afternoon where we explore and learn about new teaching ideas from Mari Nakamura, Lesley Ito, National Geographic Learning, and fellow JALT members. Learn on Sunday and do it on Monday!
The first plenary speaker, Mari Nakamura, will talk about "Making Well-being a Priority in Learning". Research shows that Japanese children have lower levels of self-efficacy and a sense of well-being than their counterparts in other countries. How can we create a learning community in which our students’ well-being is addressed and nurtured? In this practical workshop, Mari will share some key principles for designing activities that not only enhance language skills but also prioritize our students’ well-being. Participants will have ample opportunity to engage in classroom activities and discussions with their peers.
The second plenary speaker, Lesley Ito, will talk about "Practical Ways to Help Young Learners Find Their Voice". If we want young learners to grow up and become leaders to build a sustainable 21st century, we need to teach them to communicate their ideas and thoughts confidently. Students who are reluctant to give their opinions can feel comfortable doing so if the teacher starts with benign topics, such as their favorite ice cream flavor or a book they have read. Through opportunities to express themselves on "safe" topics, young learners learn that their ideas have value. In this presentation, examples of these activities will be shown and participants will have a chance to create their own.
We will also have a short presentation by various members of the Nagoya JALT and the TYL SIG. National Geographic Learning will also present series and books that you can use in the next school year! Here is a message from them: "At National Geographic Learning, our goal is to bring the world to the classroom and the classroom to life. We think the world is incredible, and that learning should inspire and amaze. We want students of English and their teachers to experience the excitement and joy of learning through our materials. We are pleased to be supporting this event and thank Nagoya JALT for the opportunity.".
