In this two-hour workshop, James York, founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Ludic Language Pedagogy journal, will introduce various ways to teach languages with games and other playful activities. No coding, programming, or game design skills are necessary! By the end of the workshop, participants will have levelled up their…
...ludic literacy (What types of games and playful activities exist?),
...language literacy (What can we teach?),
...pedagogical literacy (How can we teach [with games and play]?).
Participants will also work on a lesson plan based on LLP core elements:
- methodology (How will you teach?),
- materials (What materials will support your goals?), and
- mediation (What will you do to support your goals?)
The workshop will begin with gameplay to show participants how to adapt a simple card game to their teaching context. A discussion of game types and possible teaching strategies will follow gameplay.
Then, a framing device for designing ludic lesson plans will be introduced and many existing examples shown. Participants will engage in group discussions and brainstorming activities to map concepts to practice:
- Choosing a game and considering language use as presented in the game, as part of gameplay, and as participation in game-related communities.
- Considering teaching methodologies and teaching styles.
- Designing their own ludic lesson plan.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be invited to join the Ludic Language Pedagogy community and share their experiences with the community.
