ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING FOR JAPANESE ENGINEERS in A GLOBALIZED MARKETPLACE

A Case Study Investigating English As A Foreign Language (EFL) Pedagogy And Intercultural Communication (ICC)

Abstract

* This Nagano JALT presentation is focused on the pre-service education and training of Japanese learners of English, enabling them to meet the challenges of a globalized marketplace, one in which English has become the lingua franca for global business.

** The education of future business leaders in such a globalized marketplace requires effective intercultural communication skills, in addition to the more orthodox “four skills” approach to Japanese tertiary EFL.

*** This presentation is focused on 2 fundamental research questions:

i.) To what extent does the TOEIC measure intercultural competence?

ii.) What adjustments are required in the current TOEIC Preparation course syllabus to provide pre-service engineers with opportunities to develop intercultural sensitivity?

**** Utilizing the results of a survey of one class of textile engineering students, this presentation will empirically document the adequacy and efficacy of the widely utilized Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), a diagnostic instrument that is mandatory for English language learners in several Japanese universities.

**** The TOEIC has primarily focused on the mechanics of English language syntax, at the expense of intercultural communication (ICC) skills. The latter are widely acknowledged as a key component of “international communication,” which the TOEIC purports to measure- as evidenced by its very name!

Introduction

* This Nagano JALT presentation is empirical, based on a case study of Japanese university students training to become managers and business leaders in a globalized marketplace.

** Specifically, this presentation will examine the connections between intercultural competence and English language proficiency as measured by the TOEIC, using one class of sophomore engineers in a national Japanese university.

*** This presentation is based on a research methodology that is both quantitative and qualitative, as described in the Literature Survey.

**** The overall aim of this case study was to assess the ICC competency of the twenty-six textile engineering students in the selected sample, relative to their English listening and reading proficiency, as measured by the TOEIC.

***** The research project investigated the extent to which the widely utilized Test of English for International Communication, the TOEIC, would accurately assess students’ intercultural competence, using the TOEIC Preparation course curriculum document on offer at the engineering faculty of the university.

Shawna Carroll
John Rucynski
Saturday, May 20, 2023 - 3:00pm to 5:00pm

If you are encouraged (or required) by your institution to apply for yearly kakenhi research grants, join us for some helpful advice from a few people who have successfully applied. First we have:

Bruno Jactat (University of Tsukuba)

Perusal of a Successful Kakenhi Application : Drafting a Winning Grant Application in Japan

Writing an application for JSPS can be quite daunting on the first try. Usually most researchers who submit go through trial and error and it can take two or more submissions before ever getting one's project accepted. However, there are a few tricks one should know before sending out the final draft. We will look at the two 'ks' of 'Kakenhi', respectively, 'Katachi' (form) and 'Kontentsu' (content). These practical tips should help you understand what is at stake and maximise your chances of having your project funded from the first try.

Bruno will be followed by a panel discussion with some local scholars who have conducted successful kakenhi-funded research:

Shawna Carroll (Okayama University)

John Rucynski (Okayama University)

DATE: Saturday, 20 May, 15:00~17:00
PLACE: Notre Dame Seishin University, Joseph Hall 2300JB (3rd floor)

Teacher Well-Being & Body-Mind Exercise: Qi Gong for Teachers

Sunday, May 14, 2023 - 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Face-to-Face Event

"One effective approach to connecting physical wellbeing, and achieving a sense of calm, is to engage in mindfulness practices. A calm teacher is likely to be better able to cope with the pressures of language teaching and create a positive atmosphere in class." - Mercer & Gregersen (2020)

Spring in Japan is the perfect time for teachers to remember to take good care of themselves as they prepare to take on the challenges of a brand-new school year. Under the theme of Teacher Wellbeing, participants will be introduced to a centuries old method of exercise known as Ba Duan Jin (Eight Pieces of Silk) Qi Gong.
Developed in China about 1,000 years ago, the gentle relaxed movements of these eight simple exercises combined with dynamic stretches, breathing, and meditation, will assist the participant in achieving a sense of wellbeing and an increased level of energy in daily life.

EdTech: Technology-mediated peer feedback for improving students’ writing skills

Event Speaker(s):
Panagiota (Penny) Tzanni
Sunday, May 28, 2023 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

EdTech practical workshops are for language teachers who want to know more about EdTech and look for different ways to implement new ideas in their teaching. The presenter will demonstrate an EdTech tool and give the audience some hands-on experience.

Abstract:

Peer feedback can be one of the most useful activities for improving learners’ writing skills, learning autonomy, and critical thinking skills. However, especially in the Asian context, students are struggling to give honest feedback to their peers, mostly for cultural reasons (Nation and Carson, 2016). This issue can be solved using several websites and applications that transform peer feedback into an anonymous and easier-to-handle activity. In this webinar, we will explore technology-mediated peer feedback and propose several approaches and tools to implement it effectively in your courses.

Bio:

Panagiota (Penny) Tzanni is an EAP Lecturer and Course Designer at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China. After completing her MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham in the UK, she worked as an EAP Tutor at various universities around the world, including Coventry University and UCL (University College London. Panagiota (Penny) is now reading her PhD at Lancaster University on Technology-enhanced Learning and e-research.
