JALT Event

Joint Event with DEI: How to Deal with Microaggressions

Event Speaker(s):
Gerry Yokota
Terry R. Tuttle
Saturday, October 28, 2023 - 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Kobe JALT is pleased to welcome two presenters from DEI.

This workshop will be a professional development opportunity for attendees to learn about microaggressions: what they are and how to transform them into opportunities for growth and connection in the classroom, in the workplace, and in other professional situations. We will begin with a basic introduction to the concept of microaggressions and provide models of fundamental strategies for intervention, with ample time for Q&A. Attendees will then be invited to engage in groups with scenarios based on typical situations encountered in diverse work environments. Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of guidelines and codes of conduct from their own schools and workplaces for critical examination.

Gerry Yokota teaches at Osaka University, Kansai University, and Ritsumeikan University. In JALT, she serves on both the DEI Committee and the Code of Conduct Committee. In her research, she takes an applied cognitive linguistic approach to the representation of gender in popular culture, with a focus on intersectionality.

Terry R. Tuttle is an Assistant Language Teacher working for the Moriguchi City Board of Education and Coordinator of the JALT Gender and Language Education SIG. He completed his M.S.Ed degree with a concentration in TESOL at Temple University, Japan Campus. His current research focuses on English team teaching dynamics.

A Conceptual Toolkit for Language Teaching Practitioners: Applications in the Japanese Context

Event Speaker(s):
Eoin Jordan (University of St Andrews)
Saturday, December 16, 2023 - 3:00pm to 5:00pm

(Please note the earlier starting time; we're starting at 3 PM to leave time in the evening for our chapter Bonenkai (end of year party) at 6:30 PM.)

This presentation will provide an overview of a recently released online resource, the Conceptual Toolkit for Language Teaching Practitioners (https://ctltp.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/), with a particular focus on aspects of the resource that are relevant to the language teaching context in Japan. The session will provide background on why the resource was developed, the choice of delivery format, and how it is intended to help teachers of any language to enhance their teaching practice. It will also explore the five concepts covered in the toolkit (language, dynamicity, ideology, decolonisation, and identity), extrapolating key points of consideration for language teaching practitioners in Japan.

Bio:

Eoin Jordan has held a variety of teaching, administrative, leadership, external examiner/reviewer, and consultancy roles related to language teaching and assessment since beginning his career in this area in 2001. He has worked in Japan, Hungary, China and the UK, including as Acting Director of the Language Centre at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and currently as Director of the International Education Institute at University of St Andrews. He holds an EdD in Higher Education, an MA in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching, a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), and is a Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). He is the lead developer of a range of online tools designed to aid users of English as an additional language with academic writing in English (www.readingandwritingtools.com), host and co-creator of the online Conceptual Toolkit for Language Teaching Practitioners (ctltp.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk), and has published and presented in the following areas of research and professional interest: vocabulary acquisition and testing; peer assessment; automated writing evaluation; educational technologies; English as a Lingua Franca and World Englishes. As well as being a language teacher, Eoin is also an enthusiastic language learner – he has studied Japanese to an advanced level, and Chinese to an intermediate level.

Abstract – With the proliferation of fallacious arguments, “fake news,” and untrustworthy sources in today’s multimedia landscape, critical thinking skills are vital not only in one’s native language but also when engaged in the task of language learning. The presenters will give an overview of a new book in Routledge’s ‘Research and Resources in Language Teaching’ series that provides a springboard for teaching critical thinking skills in the language classroom (Hadley  & Boon, 2023). The presenters will explain what critical thinking is, outline a cyclical process for introducing students to critical thinking, demonstrate several critical thinking classroom activities that teachers can use in their classes, explore ways to incorporate critical thinking into the curriculum, and share ideas for how to create one’s own critical thinking activities.

About the presenters

Andy Boon is a Professor in the Global Communications Department of Toyo Gakuen University, Japan. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Aston University, UK, and has published numerous articles on methodology, motivation, and teacher development. He is also author and co-author of several writing, listening and speaking, and news media ELT textbooks and scores of graded readers for English language learners.

Gregory Hadley is a Professor of Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics at Niigata University, Japan. He received his PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, UK, where his primary focus was in the Sociology of English Language Teaching. A Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford, UK, he is the author of English for Academic Purposes in Neoliberal Universities: A Critical Grounded Theory (2015) and Grounded Theory for Applied Linguistics: A Practical Guide (2017).

September 10th meeting (Carlos Budding on Self Access Center Adaptation and Results)

Event Speaker(s):
Carlos Budding

Self Access Center Adaptation and Results

Abstract: This presentation has two main foci. The first one is a brief historical account of the university’s Self-Access Center (SAC) known as the Development and Intercultural Studies Center (LDIC) and how it has evolved since the university opened almost 20 years ago. The other focus will address how assessment of students’ independent work was modified due to the pandemic and how this change has yielded very positive results in terms of the work being produced independently by students.

Bio: Carlos Budding moved to the USA from Argentina at 12, where he learned English, American Sign Language, and French. His studies led him to get an MA in Linguistics from Gallaudet University, and another MA in Education from George Mason University. Prior to moving to Japan, Carlos worked as an ESL/ASL Teacher. Currently he works at Akita International University as an Associate Professor in EAP and is the Coordinator of the university's Self-Access Center.
