Ann Mayeda
Katherine Thornton
Christopher Phelps
Saturday, September 23, 2023 - 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Kobe JALT is pleased to welcome the following three presenters!

Presentations 1
The Ins and Outs of Building a SALC in Japan
Presenter: Ann Mayeda
Abstract:

The presenter will give a brief overview of the two SALCs she has been involved in developing, one of which began with the research to the initial pitch, the physical construction, and program implementation; and the other which involved initial design and construction, a subsequent remodel with revised program development and curriculum integration. She will share her experiences on what goes into establishing and maintaining a SALC in negotiating for funds and faculty positions at the administrative level and when interacting with university administration. Finally, she will discuss some of the challenges including changing mindsets about language teaching and learning and the importance of making connections within the entire university community.
Bio:
Ann Mayeda
teaches at Konan Women’s University in Kobe. Her research interest focuses on learner development and issues surrounding autonomy as it applies to young learners and young adult learners. She is currently on the learning advising team and oversees the management of e-space in the Faculty of Global Studies.

Presentation 2
Supporting Student Staff in a Self-Access Learning Centre: Creating Opportunities for Student Ownership and Leadership
Presenter: Katherine Thornton and Christopher Phelps
Abstract:

Student staff and volunteers can be the lifeblood of a successful self-access learning centre (SALC). By supporting academic and administrative staff, they can make the SALC environment friendly and welcoming for users, and, being students themselves, make sure that SALC services and activities are relevant and engaging for the target students. Working in a SALC also offers students the opportunity to build leadership and teamwork skills. In some SALCs, the role is a paid position, whereas in others all members act as volunteers.
In this presentation, Katherine will explain how the student staff system has evolved at E-CO, the SALC she is the founder and director of, supplemented with examples from other contexts. Chris will then share insights from his own research into student staff experiences. Finally, we will give participants the opportunity to discuss their own ideas about how to foster student engagement and ownership in a SALC environment.
Bio:
Katherine Thornton is an associate professor and learning advisor at Otemon Gakuin University, Osaka. She is the founder and director of E-CO (English Café at Otemon), the university’s self-access centre, and current president of the Japan Association of Self-Access Learning (JASAL). Her research focuses on multilingualism in self-access environments, and second language identities.

Christopher Phelps is a learning support teacher at Global Commons, the self-access centre at Kyoto Sangyo University. He is currently writing his M.A. dissertation at the University of Birmingham on student staff at self-access centres and their motivation.

Empowering Autonomy-Supportive Leadership: Fostering Student-Led Learning Communities Across Disciplines

Event Speaker(s):
Daniel Hooper
Sunday, September 17, 2023 - 2:00pm to 4:30pm

In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, the role of educators goes beyond imparting knowledge; it involves nurturing future leaders who can adapt, innovate, and lead in diverse fields. This presentation/workshop introduces an autonomy-supportive approach to leadership training that transcends language learning and can be integrated into a range of different disciplines. Central to this approach is the prioritization of learners' well-being and empowerment. The strategies that will be shared in this presentation/workshop are based on empirical findings from mainstream psychology and encourage educators to create environments where every student's voice is not only heard but valued. By nurturing a positive emotional climate, educators can establish a fertile ground for learning, collaboration, and personal growth. Furthermore, through autonomy-supportive leadership training, educators can initiate a positive cycle that elevates current student leaders and instills a sense of purpose and responsibility in them. Furthermore, this approach cultivates skills that transcend the classroom, equipping students to be resilient, adaptive, and influential leaders in their future endeavors. In this event, the presenter will introduce numerous practical examples, hands-on activities, and real-world success stories that illustrate the transformative impact of an autonomy- supportive approach for student leadership development.

Daniel Hooper (PhD, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies) is an associate professor in the Department of English Communication at Tokyo Kasei University. He has taught in Japan for 17 years, predominantly in higher education and English conversation schools. His doctoral thesis was an ethnographic case study of a student-led learning community in a Japanese university self-access center. His research interests include learner and teacher identity, communities of practice, and the English conversation school industry. His most recent project is From Student to Community Leader: A Guide for Autonomy-Supportive Leadership Development, a practice-oriented book co-authored with Satoko Watkins and published by Candlin and Mynard.

Transmedia Storytelling in the Foreign Language Classroom:    Multiple perspectives on differentiation and cooperative learning

Speaker: Mariana Ferrarelli

In the light of recent technological developments teaching increasingly becomes a complex and challenging pursuit. In an accelerated world where fake news and artificial intelligence permeate every social network, Transmedia Storytelling in Education has proved to open engaging doors towards critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and collective creativity. These skills are crucial for students as they converge with another key element in today's datafied and platformized society: digital media literacy.

During the session the speaker will invite participants to explore the relevance of participatory approaches in the foreign language classroom and explore how and why educators and students should become active producers of knowledge. The aim of the workshop is to experience transmedia strategies as possible bridges to connect the inside and the outside of the classroom while engaging in active cooperative learning via the exploration of a specific transmedia project in education: The Coded Man.

Mariana Ferrarelli holds an MA in Scientific Research Methodology. She works as a lecturer for undergraduate and graduate programs, and as a techno-pedagogical consultant in various institutions where she designs and supports digital projects. She is the coordinator of the Observatory of Innovation in Higher Education (Isalud University) and a member of the Argentine Alfamed Network. Her research focuses on technology integration in education, teacher training, and transmedia storytelling in education. She is the author of various academic publications, including the recently published book Teaching at University from Restless Perspectives as a compiler, and the article Augmented Literacies: Producing, Expressing, and Collaborating in Digital Culture on critical literacies.

[F2F] Having a good laugh: the merits of using cartoons as teaching material in university English classes

Event Speaker(s):
Frances Causer, Seijo University
Sunday, October 15, 2023 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Abstract: Humour is a fascinating aspect of other languages and cultures, but it can be difficult to grasp, and is therefore often passed over. I have however found cartoons to be an excellent gateway to humour in English-speaking countries for Japanese university students. As I developed a successful repertoire of cartoons, it became evident that cartoons are equally valuable in developing students critical thinking, and extra-linguistic competence in English, specifically in general knowledge, knowledge of history, politics and current events, and the cultures of different countries, including their own and non-English-speaking countries as well as the range of countries in which English is dominant. Moreover, students have to engage in active learning to be able to understand cartoons, and the variety of their reactions to the different types of humour they discover naturally leads to stimulating discussions. Cartoons are of most value in my kyoshoku katei classes (required classes for students aiming to qualify as teachers of English) but can also be used in other classes. My presentation will show many examples of the cartoons I have used (both in face to face and Zoom classes) and explain how to maximise the advantages of cartoons for students learning – and avoid their pitfalls. Students and I have had great fun with cartoons, and I hope my presentation will encourage you to experiment with cartoons in your classes too.

Frances Causer
Faculty of Arts & Literature, Seijo University, Tokyo

Frances Causer currently teaches drama, cultural studies, Japanese literature and English language classes at Seijo University. She prefers developing her own teaching materials to using textbooks, and, like many Brits, can’t refrain from cracking jokes – so it was a no-brainer to explore how to incorporate cartoons and humour in her teaching!

[Zoom] Using Google Apps and ChatGPT for Language Learning

In this presentation, we will explore less-common Google Apps, including Google Lens, Google Keep, and Jamboard, along with the more mainstream Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Slides. The presentation will focus on real-world applications that encourage collaboration, particularly in educational settings. We will also discuss how teachers at my university, Nagoya University of the Arts, have used Google Spaces, Forms, Classroom, and Drive to share activities for our communal textbook, Teaching English Gym. Additionally, we will present the results of our new project, which incorporates ChatGPT into the mix, allowing us to create more individualized student activities and feedback.
