[F2F] Changes in English Teachers' Medium of Instruction throughout the Pandemic

Event Speaker(s):
Julia Kawamoto, Ehime University
Eleanor Carson, Matsuyama University
Ian Willey, Kagawa University
Sunday, April 16, 2023 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Julia Kawamoto
Eleanor Carson
Ian Willey

This meeting was originally scheduled for January but moved to April.

[Face-to-face meeting]

This presentation will focus on how English teachers adapted their medium of instruction during the first two years of the pandemic. Data were gathered from surveys, teacher interviews, and class observations. In 2020, Japanese and non-Japanese teachers reported using more Japanese than normal on learning management systems (LMS) and synchronous systems (e.g., Zoom). In 2021, both groups of teachers returned to "normal" levels of Japanese/English use (i.e., using less Japanese). Surprisingly, however, both Japanese and non-Japanese teachers tended to use more Japanese for all teaching functions. Non-Japanese teachers tended to make greater use of writing functions, such as Chat, to reinforce their statements or instructions. Following the presentation, attendees will have the chance to share how they handle various teaching situations in terms of teaching language.

Julia Kawamoto has been teaching in Japan for twenty-seven years. She is an associate professor at Ehime University with a PhD in applied linguistics from Hiroshima City University. Ian Willey has an MA in TESL from Kent State University and a PhD in second language writing from Hiroshima City University. He is currently an associate professor at Kagawa University. His research interests include English for Specific Purposes, Medium of Instruction, and International Posture.

EdTech 201: Language Labs & ZenGengo

Event Speaker(s):
Erin Noxon
Paul Raine
Friday, December 9, 2022 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm
Erin Noxon
Paul Raine

EdTech 201 is a practical workshop for language teachers who want to know more about EdTech and look for different ways to implement new ideas in their teaching. In EdTech 201, each presenter will demonstrate an EdTech tool and give the audience some hands-on experience.

Erin Noxon: Make your own free LL using Google Docs, Classroom, Forms, and Videos

Monitored read-aloud practice, listening to different speakers, answering questions... All things you would love for your students to be able to do in the language lab. But, do you have the time, the budget, and can you find the right software? And how do you even begin to get feedback on how they are learning? What if you could do it all for free, with equipment that you already have lying around, and, after the initial set up time, the class took care of itself? Over the past years I've created my own curriculum out of spare parts, using G Suite tools for voice recognition, Forms-based grading and more. I'll teach you how to do it.

Paul Raine: Nation’s Four Strands and Digital Language Pedagogy with ZenGengo

In recent years, the move toward blended and hybrid forms of language learning has led many teachers to re-evaluate their digital toolsets. Language teachers in particular need not only a reliable set of tools but also a solid pedagogical framework within which these tools can be put to use. Renowned linguist Paul Nation argues that a well-balanced language course should consist of “Four Strands”: meaning-focused input, meaning-focused output, language- focused learning, and fluency development. In this presentation, the speaker will demonstrate the effectiveness of ZenGengo (www.zengengo.com), a web-based language teaching and learning platform, in creating activities that correspond to Nation's Four Strands.

PresentERs Nov 2022

Sunday, November 27, 2022 - 7:00pm

A short talk about Extensive Reading from one of our members or from the wider ER community on Sunday 27 November 19:00-19:30 (followed by our LoungERs social event 'til late).

This month’s PresentER is Sumiya Dulamtsoo and her student Baljinnyam who will be talking about teacher and student experiences using Xreading in Mongolia. Join the event on Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86937792669) or through the Facebook event on our page http://www.facebook.com/groups/ersig.

We want to hear from a wide variety of people in the ER community about how they do extensive reading, so we would like to invite anyone interested in talking about a reading program at their school.

The event will involve a short 10-15 minute casual talk from our PresentER (maybe you!), followed by around 15-20 minutes of questions/discussion. You could talk about your library, how you use graded readers, you or your students' favorite books, how much your students read, your own extensive reading in another language, or anything extensive reading related.

We would love to hear from people working in different contexts (language schools, eikaiwa, public schools, private schools, kindergartens, libraries, universities...) so we can learn from each other.

If you are interested in sharing something about how you do extensive reading at a PresentERs meeting in the coming months, please complete this Google Form.

https://forms.gle/8i7ZwpstiuxinRdF7

PresentERs will take place on the last Sunday of each month online on Zoom. It is free for anyone to attend.

Group Work in the Oral & Literacy Classrooms

Event Speaker(s):
Frid Joanis
Mark Guthrie
Saturday, December 17, 2022 - 6:00pm

Although it is a perennial aspect of the ESL classroom, group work is frequently implemented as an afterthought: it is a means to an end, a break in the schedule, or a chance for students to let off steam. However, this attitude risks losing the real efficacy of classroom peer interactivity: an opportunity for shared learning. It is only by exploring the reasons as to why the empirical support for a shift from teacher-led to student-led group work is so vehement, that we truly uncover the power of group work in the classroom. Group Work in the Oral and Literacy Classrooms is a workshop that not only explores these reasons but demonstrates how various activities can be implemented, modified, and adapted for both oral and literary activities. The presenters aim to help you augment your own imagination and understanding of group interaction in the best way possible: in a group of your peers.
