Navigating the Multis of Multiliteracies through Poster Presentations

Event Speaker(s):
Colleen Dalton
Friday, November 25, 2022 - 7:30pm

Date: November 25th, Friday 7:30pm-8:30pm
Fee: Free
Location: Online/Zoom
Registration: https://forms.gle/9QZ7eBi6VkeaRjun6

Multiliteracies is a term which recognizes that developments in society have significantly broadened the language and literacy skills people need to succeed; traditional reading and writing of standard language is no longer sufficient. Although it is not a new idea today, the pandemic has provided language educators with a valuable opportunity to play multiliteracies-catch-up in the classroom, including in the second language classroom.

In this talk, I will first introduce a few basic points about multiliteracies and then suggest how a poster presentation activity can help teachers integrate multiliteracies into a university class. You may be a natural techie who has been waiting eagerly for this moment or may be someone like me who rather plugs along but is always a digital step behind. Whichever you are, simply paying more attention to what students are doing in and out of the classroom may help prepare them to navigate the communication challenges of the future.

Colleen Dalton teaches general education and English education classes on the Faculty of Education campus of Shinshu University in Nagano City.

Learner Showcase: ELL Journeys (featuring Daisuke Kanamori)

Event Speaker(s):
Daisuke Kanamori
Tuesday, December 6, 2022 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm

In what we are planning as a new regular East Shikoku event, our ‘Learner Showcase’ series celebrates ELLs who have gone on to lead inspirational lives, thanks in part to the power of language learning. The series targets language learners through chapter outreach and draws attention to East Shikoku JALT as community language education resource.

In the first event in this new series, we invite Mr. Daisuke Kanamori to share his ELL journey that has taken him around the world. Daisuke’s journey is highlighted by humanitarian aid and refugee work in Africa, local conflict resolution accomplishments in challenging international contexts, and social contributions at home. Daisuke studied English and Intercultural Communication at university in Kochi and participated in JALT programs such as the Asian Youth Forum as an undergraduate. Bringing together language, culture, and his passion for soccer, he then founded an NPO to help children recover from the Great East Japan Earthquake Through this NPO, he led an international exchange by taking Fukushima youth to the 2012 London Olympics. Daisuke returned to school to study at Oxford and at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland (M.Litt. in Peace and Conflict Studies), and then began a career in international public service, working for NGOs in Zambia and Kenya, and then for JICA in South Sudan. Daisuke currently works for the UN in New York City.

East Shikoku JALT’s ‘Learner Showcase’ Series aims to:

celebrate ELLs who have enriched their lives (and society) though language study
celebrate the language teachers who have contributed to their journeys
inspire young language learners by drawing attention to successful ELL journeys
promote excellence in language learning and teaching
highlight the East Shikoku JALT chapter as a local language education resource

This will be a F2F event only.

Practical ideas for classroom pronunciation practice

Event Speaker(s):
Roger Ferrari
Bobby Saito
Saturday, November 26, 2022 - 3:00pm

Roger Ferrari

This is a brief introduction of a method I've developed to help English learners improve their speaking skills. It is based on acting techniques and speech therapy and involves repetition of sounds to strengthen the biomechanics of speech (the tongue, jaw, lips and such). The presentation will discuss the background of the method and then how to work from sound isolation to repetition drills.

Bobby Saito

This accent modification workshop may be useful for teachers who struggle with helping their students to adjust their English pronunciation, by engaging in coaching scenarios with fellow teachers. The main points that will be covered are: functionability; maintaining motivation; understanding oral anatomy & places of articulation; and goal oriented coaching. The goal for most speakers is to no longer require cuing or correction from their teachers. Therefore we must figure out how to help our students achieve a level of self-correction and generalization of their new skills.

Pronunciation Practice for International Intelligibility in the EIL Classroom

Event Speaker(s):
Robert Peacock
Saturday, October 29, 2022 - 3:00pm

Pronunciation skills are vital for successful communication in English in today's globalized world. But there are many important questions related to pronunciation practice.

• Do learners need to sound like native speakers in order to communicate well?
• How can learners retain their L1 identity?
• When and how should learners practice their pronunciation?

In this workshop, we will look at the importance of international intelligibility when learning English as an international language (ElL) as well as some practical tips for integrating pronunciation practice with other skills as part of a balanced 4-skills course.

Practical Approaches to Making Impactful Presentations

Sunday, December 18, 2022 - 1:30pm to 4:00pm

Jackson Lee writes, "After a year of presentations, events, and conferences, now is a great time to reflect on your presentation styles and approaches. What are your ways to capture your audience’s attention? Are you using your slides efficiently? How do you end your talks memorably?

In this session, the speaker will introduce and demonstrate essential skills and approaches that can be applied immediately to improve presentations of a variety of levels and settings. Together, we will explore multiple ways to introduce and conclude a talk, as well as become more aware of common downfalls some speakers habitually find themselves attached to. Overall, this session will help you be able to share your ideas and connect with the audience in more effective and impactful ways. The elements discussed will also be applicable to students who are learning about foundational presentation skills. Students and teachers of presentation classes are highly encouraged to partake in this session."

Gunma JALT 6th Annual MyShare and AGM

Event Speaker(s):
Jeff Contreras
Matt Potter
David Garwood
Raymond Hoogenboom
Heather McCulloch
Sunday, November 6, 2022 - 2:00pm to 4:30pm

After a long hiatus during COVID19, Gunma JALT will be returning to in-person meetings in style with our 6th Annual MyShare.

This year our speakers will share their valuable insights spanning a wide variety of teaching contexts and rich experiences, from elementary school education to university teaching and self-study language learning. Abstracts for the respective presentations can be found below. We hope you'll join us for this fantastic opportunity to get together and theorize, philosophize and socialize.

On conclusion of the MyShare, we will then conduct our Annual General Meeting (AGM). This is the time when we look for and vote on new chapter officers. At Gunma JALT, we are always looking for help, so if you are interested, this is your chance although you are welcome to join us at any time during the year.

MyShare #1
Designing Lesson Flow for Efficiency and Stamina - Jeff Contreras
This presentation will introduce an original approach for teachers to organize the primary set of instructional materials to be efficient with time-on-task, permit appropriate interaction time, and consider student and teacher stamina. Through this approach, more content can be comfortably covered in the same time frame of a standard 90-minute lesson by increasing student productivity. When considering the integration of the task and activities, the comfort level of both the teacher and students can be factored into lesson content.
JEFF CONTRERAS is an Associate Professor in the Center for Language Teaching. He has been teaching at Gunma University for 26 years. He holds an MA in Educational Administration from University of Arizona and specializes in Classroom Management and Cooperative Learning. Additionally, he is the manager for the Moodle system for a university-wide coordinated curriculum.

MyShare #2
A Pronunciation Activity to Foster Cooperative Autonomous Learning - Matt Potter
Pronunciation can be taught through the teacher providing a model for students to listen to and repeat. Nevertheless, activities that equip students with the skills they need to improve pronunciation while reducing dependence on teacher modelling can foster autonomous lifelong learning. This presentation will demonstrate a fun and co-operative activity that encourages learners to understand, process and produce pronunciation focused language independent of the teacher and on a deeper level than the “listen and repeat “methodology.
MATT POTTER teaches at several universities in Kanto and holds an MATESOL from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. His interests include constructivist teaching and learning.

MyShare #3
Methods of Managing Classroom Energy and Student Focus - David Garwood
While teachers plan lessons around the content they are required to teach, underlying every good lesson plan is a consideration of how students will respond to and engage with each activity. Being aware of the energy present in a classroom and knowing how to manage this improves student focus and, consequently, their retention of studied material significantly. This presentation, focusing on the context of elementary grade learners, is concerned with basic methods of managing this energy; methods that will (ideally) improve both the teacher and learner experience during lessons.
DAVID GARWOOD has had several years of experience as an ALT in Gunma Prefecture and holds an MA in History from Massey University, New Zealand.

MyShare #4
More Than a Tape Recorder: The ALT and Meaningful Input - Raymond Hoogenboom
In primary and secondary school English education in Japan, the non-Japanese assistant language teacher (ALT) is often an underappreciated and underexploited wealth of cultural knowledge and meaningful linguistic input. This experimental activity is aimed at English teacher training and explores ways for teacher trainees to comprehend the socio-cultural depths from which ALTs can share their lives and countries.
RAYMOND HOOGENBOOM is an associate professor at Gunma University, where he is involved with program development and materials creation.

MyShare #5
“0-A2 in 90 Days?” - Heather McCulloch
How fast can I learn French? Is it possible to go from zero to a high beginner in three months? In this presentation I will reveal the answer. If I am successful, I will explain how it was done. I will admit to what I did right and where I went wrong. Finally, I will share how this fun experience has reminded me of the feeling of learning a new language. Bienvenue!
HEATHER McCULLOCH has lived in Japan for 20 years where she has been immersed in the language every day. Before that, she received a BA in Spanish literature and culture. Upon receiving her BA, she had studied Spanish for 10 years. She went on to study both Chinese and Korean. At present she is learning French and hopes to widen her language knowledge by learning more languages in the future.

We will take a short rest break midway or so through the event and light refreshments will be provided for attendees.
