Multi-word expressions in second language learning and processing

Event Speaker(s):
Anna Siyanova-Chanturia
Sunday, September 25, 2022 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Abstract:

Recent years have seen growing interest in multi-word expressions (MWEs) and their role in second language learning and teaching. MWEs encompass a large set of sequences above the word level, such as collocations (strong tea), binomials (fish and chips), multi-word verbs (put up with), idioms (tie the knot), and so on. These sequences differ in a number of ways; however, what they have in common is that proficient language speakers recognise them as highly familiar and use them extensively.

MWEs are important because they constitute a large proportion of authentic spoken and written discourse, and are considered an essential component of mature linguistic performance. The abundance of MWEs puts them at the forefront of vocabulary teaching and learning. In addition, research suggests that using MWEs can be a quick way of developing fluency, particularly, in the early stages of language learning.

In the present talk, I will introduce MWEs and review some empirical evidence attesting to an important role they play in second language learning and processing.

Anna Siyanova-Chanturia is Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Anna’s research aims to answer important theoretical, practical and methodological questions pertaining to how humans learn and use a second language. In particular, her interests include bilingualism, psychological aspects of second language acquisition, usage-based approaches to language acquisition, vocabulary teaching and learning, multi-word expressions, and quantitative research methods.

Spelling the foreign: A few observations on katakana and beyond

Event Speaker(s):
Peter Backhaus
Saturday, October 15, 2022 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Abstract:
In this talk I will deal with the (ortho)graphic representation of Western loan words in Japanese. I start with a brief overview of katakana spelling rules and the phonemic principles behind them. Next I will discuss other available script options for writing loan words, which include not only hiragana and, where available, kanji, but also the roman alphabet. In a third step, I will speculate about how these unaltered roman spellings of loan words are starting  to leave their mark on the romanization of domestic Japanese vocabulary, as witnessed by many innovative spellings based on English orthography rather than Hepburn or kunrei rules. These are particularly common in the commercial domain, with examples such as Cocolo for kokoro, Benry for benri, and, most impressively perhaps, alc for aruku.

Bio:
I am a linguist with special interest in sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and stylistics. I have done research on multilingual signage in central Tokyo, communication in Japanese eldercare, the language of dating spam mails, and, most recently, address terms in American literature. I am also a regular contributor to the Japan Times’ “Bilingual” column. I teach English language and linguistics at Waseda University.

Post-it Presentations: Collegial support for your practice

Event Speaker(s):
Tim Cleminson (organizer)
Saturday, July 30, 2022 - 3:00pm to 5:00pm

Presenters write down a personal puzzle or question about their practice, then write a couple of short points to discuss. Observer/participants listen to presenters introduce their puzzles. They can share experiences and add thoughts and reflections to the puzzle. In this way, the presentation is collaborative and grows throughout the session. This will be in two sessions: an online session and a face-to-face session at NDSU.

PresentERs (October)

Sunday, October 30, 2022 - 7:00pm

PresentERs:

A short talk about Extensive Reading from one of our members or from the wider ER community on Sunday 30 October 19:00-19:30 (followed by our LoungERs social event 'til late). This month's PresentER will be announced shortly.

Join the event on Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86937792669)

We want to hear from a wide variety of people in the ER community about how they do extensive reading, so we would like to invite anyone interested in talking about a reading program at their school.

The event will involve a short 10-15 minute casual talk from our PresentER (maybe you!), followed by around 15-20 minutes of questions/discussion. You could talk about your library, how you use graded readers, you or your students' favorite books, how much your students read, your own extensive reading in another language, or anything extensive reading related.

We would love to hear from people working in different contexts (language schools, eikaiwa, public schools, private schools, kindergartens, libraries, universities...) so we can learn from each other.

If you are interested in sharing something about how you do extensive reading at a PresentERs meeting in the coming months, please complete this Google Form.

PresentERs will take place on the last Sunday of each month online on Zoom. It is free for anyone to attend.

How to Teach English Pronunciation to Japanese Speakers

Event Speaker(s):
Joshua Popenoe, Popenoe Method
Sunday, September 18, 2022 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

[Please note that the starting time is moved to 10:00 a.m. for this meeting only as the speaker is presenting from New York.]

Co-sponsored by East Shikoku JALT and Matsuyama JALT.

During my life in Japan, I was well aware of the difficulties Japanese speakers have learning English pronunciation. On returning to the States, I wondered if I could bring a fresh perspective to this challenge. Over 20 years of study and practical experience teaching Japanese group classes and private clients in New York City, I created a complete methodology for teaching English pronunciation which has proven to be very successful.

Speech is a physical skill. Our first language is spoken unconsciously thanks to muscle memory, which allows us to focus on what we’re saying it, not on how we’re moving our mouth to form the words. The pronunciation of other languages however often requires consciously learning new physical mechanics, sounds and rhythm patterns, etc. This is especially true for Japanese speakers learning English.

In this workshop I will present an overview of my methodology and specific examples of how I teach, including various techniques that are essential for Japanese speakers to learn. I will be delighted to answer any and all questions about my work and experience in this field.

This workshop will be of value to anyone who is interested in teaching English pronunciation to Japanese or other foreign speakers.

Bio: Born in Washington D.C. Lived in Malaysia as a child for 2 years. As a teenager attended the well-known “free school” Summerhill in England. At age 16, wrote a book with photos about my experience there titled “Inside Summerhill.” After publication, gave lectures at colleges about my experience with “free” education. Went to Goddard and Bennington College, studying music. Moved to Japan for 16 years, working as a voice talent/singer, and creative artist. Moved to New York City in 1998 and focused primarily on English pronunciation training for Japanese speakers. Developed the Popenoe Method, a complete and comprehensive pronunciation training program, and finally produced the Popenoe Method Online Video Pronunciation Master Course, currently available as a subscription membership course.
